Delta State To Eradicate Neglected Tropical Diseases


The Delta state government has reiterated its desire to eradicate Neglected Tropical Diseases from the state through the State Primary Health Care Development Agency.

 The chairman, Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Isioma Okobah, disclosed this today, while playing host to the Medical Advisor German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association , Dr. Charles Nwafor.

Dr Okobah also stated that steps were being taken to establish Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Ward in the state adding that the agency carries out periodic treatment to communities across the state.

The Chairman remarked that the state currently operates a leprosy camp in Eku and that the Tuberculosis Ward would soon be operational in the state.

She also used the opportunity to appeal to residents to desist from stigmatizing patients of Leprosy and Tuberculosis stressing that the diseases were not caused by spiritual attacks.

Earlier, the Medical Advisor Dr. Charles Nwafor said the team was in the state for the Global Fund supervisory visit to access the level of preparedness in the state.

Dr Nwafor said he was pleased with the state for keying into leprosy and Tuberculosis programmes as the state had already undertaken the diagnosis and treatment of leprosy and Tuberculosis.

He however, sued for training and retraining of health workers  engaged in Neglected Diseases  treatment stating that their knowledge of modern techniques would boost the eradication of the diseases.
